Payroll year-end 2021/2022

Feb, 2022

This article will outline the 2021/22 end of year procedure and provide you with a summary of the changes which are being introduced for the 2022/23 tax year.

Check if you have a week 53

Week 53 takes place when a company pay date falls on 5th April in 2022. This year the 5th of April falls on a Tuesday. Each year is made up of 365 days or 52 weeks and 1 day and when the extra day falls on your company payday, Week 53 comes into effect. If all of your employees are paid monthly just process your payroll as normal.

Qtac will perform this action automatically when processing week 53. The software will ignore all previous tax and pay for the year and will perform a standalone calculation in that pay period.

Read our latest blog for more information on week 53.

Preparing for the new tax year

To ensure your software is always performing to its best and that the migration into the 2022/2023 software goes smoothly, you will need to make sure your software is up to date.

Critical updates are released via live updates, and you should see software messages informing you of any new versions however, it is worth checking for updates by following the guidance below.

It is essential that both 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 are up to date before migration. The Qtac update guide can be found here.

Health and Social Care Levy

The government announced a new 1.25% Health and Social Care Levy to fund the NHS and Social Care. The levy will be effectively introduced from April 2022, when National Insurance Contributions (NICs) for working-age employees, self-employed individuals and employers will increase by 1.25% and be added to the current NHS allocation.

We encourage all employers to send out a communication to their employees or clients highlighting this change. This should help employees to gain a better understanding of the uplift, detailing what their increased NICs will be used for.

Qtac allows users to add a message onto employees’ payslips. To understand how to add a default payslip message, click here, or read our latest blog on the Health and Social Care Levy here.

The Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) Rebate Scheme

The Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) Rebate Scheme has been temporarily reintroduced to support employers dealing with heightened levels of absence due to COVID-19.

Small or medium-sized employers with under 250 employees may be eligible to claim SSP costs for up to two weeks per employee for COVID-19 related absences from 21st December 2021.

This is a reintroduction of the scheme which originally ran until 30th September 2021. It is a new claims period. This means you can claim for up to two weeks of SSP per employee who has needed time off for Coronavirus related reasons, regardless of whether you claimed for them under the previous scheme. Claims can be made retrospectively from mid-January, and the employee must have already been paid the SSP.

Minimum Wage Rates for 2022

The table below shows the National Living Wage and National Minimum Wage rates which will apply from 1 April 2022. These have been accepted in full by the Government.
